1867, Canada: as winter tightens its grip on the isolated settlement of Dove River, a man is brutally murdered and a 17-year old boy disappears. Tracks leaving the dead man's cabin head north towards the forest and the tundra beyond. In the wake of such violence, people are drawn to the township - journalists, Hudson's Bay Company men, trappers, traders - but do they want to solve the crime, or exploit it? One-by-one the assembled searchers set out from Dove River, pursuing the tracks across a desolate landscape home only to wild animals, madmen and fugitives, variously seeking a murderer, a son, two sisters missing for 17 years, a forgotten Native American culture, and a fortune in stolen furs before the snows settle and cover the tracks of the past for good. In an astonishingly assured debut, Stef Penney deftly weaves adventure, suspense, revelation and humour into a panoramic historical romance, an exhilarating thriller, a keen murder mystery and ultimately, with the sheer scope and quality of her storytelling, one of the books of the year.

Interesting crime story set in the era of the Hudson’s Bay company

I was attracted to this book as I’m fascinated by wolves! The irony is that wolves barely get a mention in this story of a murder set in the frozen wastes of Canada.
The narrative commences slowly but picks up pace when a reclusive Frenchman is murdered in his cabin. A teenage boy disappears at the same time and his mother persuades an Indian trapper to take her on a journey to find him. There are several interesting characters along the way and inferences of theft and murder involving some members of the Hudson’s Bay company, an organisation notorious for making a fortune by dealing in huge quantities of animals furs. This enterprise significantly reduced the numbers of animal species like foxes, wolves, bears etc during that period.
Some of the themes in the book resonate today and the descriptions of the Canadian wilderness are evocative.
I really enjoyed this story. It wasn’t merely a page turner and was well crafted with strong insights into character and motivation.
Recommended reading.
