In July 1923 the forty-year-old yawl-rigged Amaryllis, 52 feet on the waterline, became the smallest British craft to circumnavigate the world. Owned and let by a signally intrepid retired naval officer, the ship left Plymouth in September 1920. She headed west-about via Panama to Sydney, thence easterly to Auckland and homeward by the East Indies, Colombo, Aden, Suez, the Med and across the English Channel to Dartmouth. The voyage was reliably described at the time as an achievement unsurpassed in modern seafaring.
